Buemi scores Tokyo points after a mixed but promising weekend

Two top-10 finishes for the Swiss driver in the inaugural Tokyo E-Prix
Sébastien Buemi and Envision Racing leave Tokyo with valuable championship points after a double-header marked by unpredictable weather, a cancelled qualifying session on Saturday, and an impressive comeback drive on Sunday.
Saturday – Strong performance in the wet
The first race of the weekend took place in tricky conditions after qualifying was cancelled due to heavy rain. The starting grid was set based on Free Practice 2 times, putting Buemi in P6.
After a few laps behind the safety car, the race got underway with a standing start. Buemi immediately activated Attack Mode and made his way up to P3, showing strong pace in the wet. A red flag briefly paused the race, during which most drivers took their Pit Boost stops. Once back on track, Buemi settled into P5, then overtook Mortara to finish P4, narrowly missing out on another podium.
His teammate Robin Frijns also scored points, crossing the line in P10 and being promoted to P9 after post-race penalties – marking Envision Racing’s first double top-10 of the season.
Sunday – Impressive comeback from the back
After a tough qualifying, Buemi started Race 2 from 17th on the grid. He steadily climbed through the field, using Attack Mode wisely and managing energy effectively. A late Safety Car helped close up the pack, and Buemi held on in the final-lap sprint to secure P9, benefiting from a time penalty given to Mortara ahead.
Frijns, hampered by a stop-and-go penalty from the start, was unable to recover into the points despite a strategic energy-saving approach.
Building momentum ahead of Shanghai
With two more top-10 results, Buemi remains 9th in the drivers’ standings with 45 points, while Envision Racing stays in the fight in the teams’ classification, now in 9th place with 55 points. The team now turns its focus to the next double-header in Shanghai (May 31 – June 1) with renewed motivation.
