Mixed feeling in Mexico city for Buemi and Envision racing

Mexico City hosted an action-packed second round of the Formula E championship, but it was a weekend of mixed fortunes for Sébastien Buemi, who showcased strong pace but faced setbacks that ultimately hindered his race result.

Buemi and teammate Robin Frijns started the race from the back of the grid after a post-qualifying technical penalty nullified their impressive lap times. Despite the challenging starting position on a circuit known for its limited overtaking opportunities, Buemi displayed his trademark resilience, fighting through the pack in a tactical, energy-saving drive.

Buemi crossed the line in 13th place but was later handed a penalty for an Attack Mode infringement, which relegated him to 17th in the final classification. Meanwhile, his teammate Frijns finished 11th after post-race penalties reshuffled the order.

Promising Performance Amid Challenges
The weekend began with promise as Buemi demonstrated the pace of the new GEN3 Evo car in qualifying. He delivered a strong lap in Group A, provisionally placing third and advancing to the duels. However, a technical infringement unrelated to performance gains resulted in his lap times being deleted, forcing him to start 21st on the grid.

“It’s frustrating because we had the pace to fight at the front,” said Buemi. “The car felt great, and the lap times showed that. Starting from the back made things really tough, but we gave it everything.”

Race Recap: Fighting Spirit on Display
Starting from P21, Buemi focused on energy management and maintaining pace with the pack. By Lap 13, he had conserved more energy than many of the leaders, positioning himself for a late-race charge. However, the race's dynamic changed with two Safety Car deployments in the final laps, which disrupted strategies.

Buemi used his Attack Mode allocation strategically but was unable to fully deploy it before the chequered flag due to the timing of the Safety Car periods. Despite this, he set the fastest lap of the race, underlining the potential of both his car and his driving.

“Although the race was disappointing, especially after the disqualification in qualifying when we had the potential to be well placed, we nevertheless showed great performance throughout the weekend. The track was difficult to overtake on, which made things complicated. However, we learned a lot and remain confident for the future. We'll now focus on Jeddah, where we hope to score points and continue this positive momentum.” Sébastien Buemi
