Toyota

Taken on by the Toyota team to compete in some races in 2012, as the constructor was not yet running two cars in all rounds of the championship, including the famous Le Mans 24 Hours, Sébastien was involved in the development of the Toyota hybrid at the Le Castellet circuit. At Le Mans, his car was retired after his co-driver Anthony Davidson had an accident.
14.06.2012

F1 : Third driver at Red Bull

Having raced three full seasons for Toro Rosso, Sébastien was taken on by Red Bull as the team’s third driver. His main role was to work on the development of the car in the team’s hyper-sophisticated simulator, while also being on hand at every race to stand in for one of the two drivers in a Grand Prix if the need arose.
08.06.2011

F1 : Bad luck

2011 could have been an exceptional yearfor Sébastien, except for the fact that terrible bad luck dogged him all season long. Wheels badly fitted during the race, various breakdowns, Sébastien was spared nothing, but he still managed to finish in the points seven times, quite an achievement given the circumstances!
He ended the championship 15th with 15 points.
11.06.2010

Second season of F1

For 2010, a change to the regulations meant that Toro Rosso had to design its entire car without any help from its big sister team Red Bull Racing. Starting from zero meant life wasn’t easy for the team’s drivers. Sébastien however, still managed to lead the Canadian Grand Prix for a lap, before finishing the race in eighth place. By the end of the season, having finished in the points four times, he ended the year 16th on 8 points.
12.06.2009

F1 : 2 days and they’re off!

The new Toro Rosso STR4 was not ready before March and the Barcelona test. That meant just four days to run in the car and those four days threw up a few problems that needed sorting before the first Grand Prix of the season. At the test, Sébastien had to split the time available with team-mate Sébastien Bourdais, which meant he only got two days running. Sébastien had a brilliant start to the season, as he pulled off the feat of scoring points in his maiden Formula 1 race in Melbourne, as he finished seventh in Australia, picking up two points. At the end of the season, he was 16th on 6 points.
29.03.2009

First Formula 1 Grand Prix

Melbourne 2009
The first Grand Prix of Sébastien’s career went off like a dream. His family made the trip in force to support him, as his father and two uncles came along. In his first ever F1 qualifying session, Sébastien took his Toro Rosso STR4 to thirteenth on the grid. In the race, he was just outside the points right up to the closing stages, until a collision ahead of him saw him make up two places and finish eighth. Later, when Lewis Hamilton was disqualified, it promoted him to seventh and so Sébastien scored points on his debut Grand Prix, something only the great drivers had done before, such as Sebastian Vettel, Kimi Raikkonen and Alain Prost.
13.06.2008

F1 : Things get serious

During 2008, Sébastien attended all the Grands Prix as reserve driver for the Red Bull team. At the same time, in the months of May, July, September, November and December, he drove several tests with the Toro Rosso team, which helped him get used to the complex task of driving a Formula 1 car. Finally, it led to Red Bull giving him a race drive with Toro Rosso for 2009.
12.06.2008

GP2 Europe: Tooth and nail all season

The 2008 GP2 season was not easy for Sébastien, who had to deal with a car that was very difficult to drive, to the extent his team-mates notched up hardly any decent results. Despite this, Sébastien managed to score two wins, in France and Hungary, which saw him end the championship in sixth place. During the season, he pulled off a real feat that underlined his talent and no doubt helped in securing him the Toro Rosso Formula 1 drive: in Magny-Cours on Sunday morning for the short race, Sébastien found himself down in 21st place on the grid. Despite the rain, he gambled on starting on slick tyres on a circuit where overtaking moves are reckoned to be impossible. After an amazing display of driving, he won the race, having passed all the other cars, or at least those that had stayed on track... He was the only 2008 GP2 driver to make it to Formula 1 in 2009.
06.06.2008

GP2 : Runner-up in Asia

Before tackling the European GP2 championship, Sébastien took part in the GP2 Asia series in 2008, driving for Arden. With one win, the Swiss driver finished second in the championship.
16.08.2007

GP2 : A spectacular debut

It was in Monaco in 2007 that Sébastien made his GP2 debut, as a last minute replacement for Michael Ammermuller. Right from the off, he was second fastest in the very first practice session, even though he had never raced at Monaco nor even sat in a GP2 car. He then ended the season with ART Grand Prix, while still fitting in plenty of F1 and F3 testing.
18.07.2007

F1 : First test and a great feeling!

It was in July 2007 that Sébastien drove a Formula 1 car on a race track for the very first time, when he got behind the wheel of the Red Bull at the Jerez circuit in Spain. He was driving under the watchful eye of FIA observers in order to get the famous super-license, the ticket to a Formula 1 drive.
14.06.2007

A1 GP : A victory for Switzerland

08.06.2006

Runner-up in F3

In 2006 and 2007, Sébastien took part in the Formula 3 Euroseries. In the second year, he fought for the title right down to the last round and finally ended up runner-up.
20.11.2003

BMW : Champion, then runner-up

At the end of 2003, Sébastien took part in the “BMW scholarship” which he won. The fund meant he could compete in the 2004 Formula BMW championship, finishing third behind Sebastian Vettel who was runner up that year. Picked up by Red Bull, he signed a 5 year contract with the Austrian company, which became his sponsor as of 2005. That year, he won the title in this category, before being robbed of it in the Stewards Room, because of a complex affair linked to the safety car. It is the most unhappy memory of Sébastien’s career.
01.06.2003

Champion of Italy

After taking the European title, Sébastien picked up a contract as a works drivers for 2003, which would see him win the Italian karting championship.
01.06.2002

European champion!

It is one of the victories that Sébastien is most proud of: from over 300 candidates and after several elimination rounds in Portugal and then France, Sébastien won the European karting championship, at Angerville in 2002.
01.06.1998

9 years old and already a champion!

Sébastien’s racing career started at the age of 8, three years after getting his first kart, as a lovely Christmas present in 1993. After something of a tough first year, he won the Swiss Minis championship at the age of 9. From 1998 to 2002, he won four Swiss karting titles: Mini, Mini90, SuperMini.
